Reflections on the Type What Now run

A series of reflections on what was one of the hardest (and most rewarding) weeks of my life, presented in random order (with photos by June Xie):

  • This was really hard.

  • Also, fun.

  • Also, profoundly satisfying in the way only something this hard (and scary, and fun, and scary, and hard) could be
  • Turns out, you can work with someone you love. And it can be pretty awesome.

  • I am, and always will be, tremendously grateful for the generosity and profound kindness of every single person who attended the show. I truly had the most gracious audiences, and it was through your graciousness that I was able to get up in front of you, 6 times, to relive the most awful year of my life in 90 minutes.

  • also, this.
  • Shortly after the show, someone asked me to settle a bet. Were those real tears, or was I just acting? Um… please. I had thought looking at my mom or dad’s face during the show would cause me to burst into tears — well, it turns out looking at anyone’s face caused me to burst into tears. Thinking about looking at anyone’s face caused me to burst into tears. Thinking about thinking about looking at anyone’s face caused me to burst into tears. So. Yes. They were real tears.

  • Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. For coming, for reading, for helping us become a FringeFAVE (and get a bonus performance!), for giving me your thoughts, your feedback. For telling me that the show made you happy, or sad, or anywhere in between. For sharing your stories with me, for listening to mine. For posting, for tweeting, for introducing yourself to me. For laughing with me. For crying with me. For everything. Thank you so much. I can’t say it enough, so I’ll just keep saying it: thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.

  1. I’ve said this a million times to you by now but I’ll say it again. You are an inspiration to me and someone I hope to be half as awesome as someday. Thank YOU for a life changing piece of theater and for sharing your life with all of us. 🙂
